Am 7. Mai 2014 fand am Institut der erste gemeinsame Forschungstag des Wirtschaftswissenschaftlichen Bereichs der Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) und des IWH statt. Im Rahmen zahlreicher Präsentationen haben die anwesenden Professoren der MLU sowie die Forschungsgruppenleiter des IWH ihre aktuellen Forschungsaktivitäten vorgestellt und Ansatzpunkte für zukünftige Kooperationsprojekte diskutiert. |
Am 26. Mai 2014 fand am IWH der Auftakt-Workshop des Korean-German Research Institutions Network on Unification Studies statt. Vertreter des Ministry of Strategy and Finance der Republik Korea, des Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP), der Botschaft der Republik Korea in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland sowie weiterer Einrichtungen informierten sich im Rahmen dieses Workshops über Erfahrungen bei der marktwirtschaftlichen Umstrukturierung nach Herstellung der Einheit Deutschlands. An der Veranstaltung nahmen von deutscher Seite ein Vertreter des Bundesministeriums der Finanzen und seitens des IWH Dr. Gerhard Heimpold, Abteilung Strukturökonomik, sowie Maike Irrek und Dr. Axel Lindner, beide Abteilung Makroökonomik, teil.

Andreas Schmalzbauer, M.Sc., ist seit dem 15. Mai 2014 als Doktorand in der Abteilung Makroökonomik beschäftigt. Sein Forschungsgebiet ist die Internationale Makroökonomie, insbesondere die Analyse von Leistungsbilanzungleichgewichten. Zudem unterstützt er das Team von Professor Dr. Oliver Holtemöller im Bereich der europäischen Wirtschaftspolitik. Er schloss 2010 das Masterstudium "Analyse et Politique Économiques" an der Paris School of Economics ab; davor studierte er an der Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, der Wayne State University Detroit sowie der Universität Bonn. Zuletzt war er wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter an der Rheinisch-Westfälischen Technischen Hochschule Aachen am Lehrstuhl von Prof. Rüdiger Bachmann. |

15th IWH-CIREQ Macroeconometric Workshop: "Identification and Causality in Macroeconometrics and Finance"
1. und 2. Dezember 2014 in Halle (Saale)
The Halle Institute for Economic Research and the Centre Interuniversitaire de Recherche en Economie Quantitative (CIREQ) are organizing the 15th Macroeconometric Workshop to be held in Halle (Saale) on December 1-2, 2014.
The workshop provides a platform to discuss new developments in the field of empirical and applied macroeconomic modelling and aims at bringing together academic researchers and practitioners. We invite applied and theoretical papers dealing with panel data, time series and business cycles, international macroeconometrics and finance. Papers that explicitly cover aspects of identification and causality are particularly welcome.
Each conference day is opened by a keynote speaker, followed by contributed papers.

5th Halle Forum on Urban Economic Growth

The Halle Forum on Urban Economic Growth – established in 2006 – has the aim to bring together original economic and interdisciplinary papers that cast some light on new developments in theoretical and empirical research on economic growth and development in urban environments. The Forum should also give PhD students an opportunity for presenting and discussing their research results.

The European Commission’s Scoreboard of Macroeconomic Imbalances is a rare case of a publicly released early warning system. It allows the preferences of the politicians involved to be analysed with regard to the two potential errors of an early warning system – missing a crisis and issuing a false alarm. These preferences might differ with the institutional setting. Such an analysis is done for the first time in this article for early warning systems in general by using a standard signals approach, including a preference-based optimisation approach, to set thresholds. It is shown that, in general, the thresholds of the Commission’s Scoreboard are set low (resulting in more alarm signals), as compared to a neutral stand. Based on political economy considerations, the result could have been expected. ...<<

The answer is difficult to determine because economic theory gives no simple guideline for determining the equilibrium values of real exchange rates, and the determinants of those values might have been distorted as well.
