Abstract
Die jüngste Finanz- und Wirtschaftskrise hat gezeigt, dass Entwicklungen im Bankensektor und makroökonomische Entwicklungen oftmals sehr eng miteinander verwoben sind. Banken reagieren auf eine expansive Geldpolitik, in dem sie ihre Kreditvergabe ausweiten und dabei unter Umständen höhere Risiken eingehen; umgekehrt reagiert die Geldpolitik auf Liquiditätsengpässe im Bankensektor, in dem sie zusätzliche Liquidität bereitstellt. Diese und andere Anpassungsmuster spielen sich aber nicht nur auf aggregierter Ebene ab; vielmehr liegen ihnen eine Vielzahl von zum Teil sehr unterschiedlichen Anpassungsmustern auf der Ebene der einzelnen Bank zu Grunde. Banken unterscheiden sich beispielsweise im Grad ihrer Abhängigkeit der Refinanzierung über den Interbankenmarkt, sie sind in ihrem Geschäft Zinsänderungsrisiken in unterschiedlichem Ausmaß aufgesetzt, und sie sind unterschiedlich stark im Ausland engagiert und damit von makroökonomischen Entwicklungen im Inland abhängig.

Does It Pay to Have Friends? Social Ties and Executive Appointments in Banking

Abstract
We exploit a unique sample to analyze how homophily (affinity for similar others) and social ties affect career outcomes in banking. We test if these factors increase the probability that the appointee to an executive board is an outsider without previous employment at the bank compared to being an insider. Homophily based on age and gender increase the chances of the outsider appointments. Similar educational backgrounds, in contrast, reduce the chance that the appointee is an outsider. Greater social ties also increase the probability of an outside appointment. Results from a duration model show that larger age differences shorten tenure significantly, whereas gender similarities barely affect tenure. Differences in educational backgrounds affect tenure differently across the banking sectors. Maintaining more contacts to the executive board reduces tenure. We also find weak evidence that social ties are associated with reduced profitability, consistent with cronyism in banking.

Hidden Gems and Borrowers with Dirty Little Secrets: Investment in Soft Information, Borrower Self-Selection and Competition

Abstract
This paper empirically examines the role of soft information in the competitive interaction between relationship and transaction banks. Soft information can be interpreted as a private signal about the quality of a firm that is observable to a relationship bank, but not to a transaction bank. We show that borrowers self-select to relationship banks depending on whether their privately observed soft information is positive or negative. Competition affects the investment in learning the private signal from firms by relationship banks and transaction banks asymmetrically. Relationship banks invest more; transaction banks invest less in soft information, exacerbating the selection effect. Finally, we show that firms where soft information was important in the lending decision were no more likely to default compared to firms where only financial information was used.

Abstract
This chapter assesses the sensitivity of bank cost-efficiency scores obtained with stochastic frontier analysis and data envelopment analysis. We compare CE scores of either type for a large cross-country sample of EU banks from 1996 until 2010. The results show that CE measures differ considerably depending on specification choices across parametric and nonparametric methods. The chapter documents the reasons for these differences in terms of theoretical, sample, and further specification choices.

Who Invests in Home Equity to Exempt Wealth from Bankruptcy?

Abstract
Homestead exemptions to personal bankruptcy allow households to retain their home equity up to a limit determined at the state level. Households that may experience bankruptcy thus have an incentive to bias their portfolios towards home equity. Using US household data for the period 1996 to 2006, we find that household demand for real estate is relatively high if the marginal investment in home equity is covered by the exemption. The home equity bias is more pronounced for younger households that face more financial uncertainty and therefore have a higher ex ante probability of bankruptcy.

Abstract
We investigate credit risk co-movements and contagion in sovereign debt markets of 17 industrialized countries for the period 2008-2012. We use dynamic conditional correlations of sovereign CDS spreads to detect contagion. This approach allows separating the channels through which contagion occurs from the determinants of simple interdependence. The results show that, first, sovereign credit risk comoves considerably, in particular among eurozone countries and during the sovereign debt crisis. Second, contagion cannot be attributed to one moment in time but varies across time and countries. Third, similarities in economic fundamentals, cross-country linkages in banking, and common market sentiment constitute the main channels of contagion.

Big Banks and Macroeconomic Outcomes: Theory and Cross-Country Evidence of Granularity

Abstract
Does the mere presence of big banks affect macroeconomic outcomes? In this paper, we develop a theory of granularity (Gabaix, 2011) for the banking sector, introducing Bertrand competition and heterogeneous banks charging variable markups. Using this framework, we show conditions under which idiosyncratic shocks to bank lending can generate aggregate fluctuations in the credit supply when the banking sector is highly concentrated. We empirically assess the relevance of these granular effects in banking using a linked micro-macro dataset of more than 80 countries for the years 1995-2009. The banking sector for many countries is indeed granular, as the right tail of the bank size distribution follows a power law. We then demonstrate granular effects in the banking sector on macroeconomic outcomes. The presence of big banks measured by high market concentration is associated with a positive and significant relationship between bank-level credit growth and aggregate growth of credit or gross domestic product.

Abstract
Islamic finance is based on ethical principles in line with Islamic religious law. Despite its low share of the global financial market, Islamic finance has been one of this sector's fastest growing components over the last decades and has gained further momentum in the wake of the financial crisis. The paper examines the development of and possible prospects for Islamic finance, with a special focus on Europe. It compares Islamic and conventional finance, particularly as concerns risks associated with the operations of respective institutions, as well as corporate governance. The paper also analyses empirical evidence comparing Islamic and conventional financial institutions with regard to their: (i) efficiency and profitability; and (ii) stability and resilience. Finally, the paper considers the conduct of monetary policy in an Islamic banking context. This is not uncomplicated given the fact that interest rates - normally a cornerstone of monetary policy - are prohibited under Islamic finance. Liquidity management issues are thus discussed here, with particular reference to the euro area.

Abstract
Die Untersuchung der Internationalisierung von Forschung und Entwicklung (FuE) kann gegenüber der Verwendung der FuE-Statistik mit der Analyse von Patentindikatoren ergänzt werden. Ein Vorteil gegenüber der internationalen FuE-Statistik liegt dabei in der Möglichkeit zur Unterscheidung nach technologischen Feldern sowie in der Regionalisierung der Forschungs- bzw. Erfinderaktivitäten auf verschiedenen Ebenen. Insbesondere im Falle der Betrachtung von FuE deutscher Unternehmen im Ausland stehen nur eingeschränkt Daten aus der FuE-Statistik zur Verfügung. So fehlen konsistente Daten zu den Zielländern und den Ziel-branchen der FuE deutscher Unternehmen im Ausland. Daher bieten patentbasierte Indikatoren eine neue und komplementäre Datenquelle, um die FuE-Internationalisierung Deutschlands im Zeitverlauf detailliert zu analysieren.

Abstract
Trotz fortschreitender Internationalisierung ist das Gros technologischer Aktivitäten multinationaler Unternehmen in den Konzernzentralen angesiedelt, die sich in den führenden Industrienationen befinden. Allerdings führen multinationale Unternehmen zunehmend Innovationen sowie Forschung und Entwicklung (FuE) auch an ausländischen Standorten durch. In diesem Kontext steigt auch die Bedeutung nachholender Ökonomien als Standorte für FuE sowie Innovation. Dies gilt nicht nur für die rasch wachsenden Wirtschaften Chinas und Indiens sondern auch für die mittel- und osteuropäischen Transformationsökonomien in der Europäischen Union.
