Internship at Halle Institute for Economic Research (IWH)

Interested in gaining an authentic insight in the interesting daily business and the variable tasks of an institute for economic research?

This is made possible by doing an internship at IWH! All important information on this topic are summarised here in a PDF flyer (last update: March 2024).

1. General information

When are internships available?

The IWH offers opportunities to complete internships at any times. Dates are arranged individually.

In which department may I intern?

Interns are affiliated with one of our research departments and work within a research group, where they will be coached by an IWH employee.

What kind of work can students expect?

Internships offer insights into the research performed at the institute. Interns perform theoretical and empirical work on a concrete subject and make small independent contributions. They will document the results of their work in a final report.

Is there any recompense for internships?

In general, interns are not paid. In exceptional circumstances, reimbursement for certain expenses (e.g. travel, accommodation) might be possible.

What is the minimum/maximum duration of an internship?

The duration of an internship is generally between four and eight weeks. In individual cases, other agreements are possible.

2. How to apply

Who can apply?

Students applying for an internship have to be matriculated at a university and must not be on leave.

To whom do I address my application?

Please address your application to the corresponding contact person below or to the head of the pertinent department.

When can I apply?

Applications are accepted at all times. Please note that for internships during the semester break, above all during the summer, you need to apply not less than three months in advance due to a strong demand.

Which documents are necessary?

Applications should be sent by email and should contain the following documents: letter of motivation; CV; an excerpt of current study results; degrees (e.g. BA, A-levels, diplomas) and other certificates; and confirmation of enrolment.
