Googling for Risk – Evidence from UK Offshore Deposits
This paper studies the link between bank risk, and the attention that retail depositors pay to it depending on deposit insurance. We propose a new measure of depositor attention, the Google search frequency for a given bank name.

Dr Matthieu Chavaz is economist in the Bank’s financial stability directorate. His research focuses on banking, financial history and political economy. He holds a PhD in international economics from the Graduate Institute of International Studies.
