Doctoral studies in economics at IWH

The Leibniz Institute for Economic Research Halle (IWH) offers a Doctoral Programme in Economics (DPE). These doctoral positions in economics offer young researchers the opportunity to conduct their research under excellent conditions and to establish themselves in an international network during their doctorate in economics. We talk to the head of the programme, Professor Michael Koetter.

Mr Koetter, the IWH offers the Doctoral Programme in Economics (DPE). What exactly makes this programme so special?

Professor Michael Koetter: The DPE programme at IWH is unique in Germany and is characterised by its strong research focus, close supervision and international orientation. It enables doctoral students to conduct research at one of the most renowned economic research institutes in Germany and to benefit directly from the expertise and extensive networks of our researchers. Many of our graduates go on to take up excellent national and international positions in business and academia as well as political and regulatory institutions such as the ECB after completing their doctorate in economics.

What advantages does a doctorate in economics at IWH offer participating doctoral students?

A major advantage of the DPE programme is the intensive supervision and support that our doctoral students receive throughout their doctoral studies. They work closely with experienced economists and are involved in all aspects of their academic work. They also benefit from a structured curriculum that teaches not only specialised knowledge, but also methodological and interdisciplinary skills. Another advantage of these doctoral positions in economics is the opportunity to become part of an international network, which is invaluable for both personal and professional development.

The DPE programme has a strong international focus. What role does internationalisation play for IWH and the programme itself?

Internationalisation is a central pillar of our strategy at IWH. We are convinced that excellent research is only possible in exchange with international academics and institutions. For the DPE programme, this means that our doctoral students not only conduct research at the IWH headquarters in Halle, but also have the opportunity to gain valuable experience during their doctorate in economics as part of research stays or collaborations with our international partners. We also actively encourage participation in international conferences and publication in renowned international journals.

How do doctoral students benefit specifically from networking with international partners?

Networking with international partners opens up numerous opportunities for our doctoral students, be it through joint research projects, exchanges with leading scientists or access to additional resources and data. This international cooperation not only promotes the quality of research, but also broadens the horizons of doctoral students and prepares them optimally for a career in science, a globalised economic system or in international organisations. It also strengthens the IWH's profile as a leading centre for economic research with a global focus.

What are the requirements for participating in the DPE programme?

Applicants for our doctoral positions in economics should have a strong interest in economic research and be prepared to deal intensively with complex economic issues. A completed Master's degree in economics or a related subject - e.g. mathematics, statistics, business administration, accounting and finance - is a basic requirement. In addition, we attach great importance to analytical skills, initiative and a willingness to work in an international environment. The motivation to contribute to the scientific community and to develop innovative solutions for current economic challenges is also important.

What are your goals for the future of the DPE programme?

Our goal is to further strengthen the DPE programme and establish it as one of the leading addresses for doctorates in economics in the long term. We want to further increase the international visibility of the programme and attract even more talented young academics from all over the world. We are also planning to expand our collaborations with international partners and to further support the research activities of our doctoral students through additional funding and projects.
