Ceremonial Encapsulation and the Diffusion of Renewable Energy Technology in Germany

Abstract
This inquiry employs ideas advanced by institutionalist thinker Paul Dale Bush to shed light on technology diffusion in Germany’s electrical generation and distribution industry. Research findings suggest that what Bush labeled as ceremonial dominance affects outcomes in technology selection. Evidence suggests that fossil fuel and nuclear technologies have remained favored by power producers despite the externalized environmental costs to society associated with their implementations. Advances in government policy have indeed created a framework that favorably accommodates renewable energy technologies. However, what Bush labeled ceremonial dominance is shown to persist and to contribute to ceremonial encapsulation. Consequently, renewable energy technologies have diffused only to the point that the powers behind the industry remain in dominant positions. Although there is measurable, incremental technological change in the electrical power industry, in light of the urgency of climate change problems, technologies supporting the electrical power system need to be selected more judiciously.

Towards a Theory of Climate Innovation - A Model Framework for Analyzing Drivers and Determinants

Abstract
In this article, we describe the results of a multiple case study on the indirect corporate innovation impact of climate change in the Central German chemical industry. We investigate the demands imposed on enterprises in this context as well as the sources, outcomes and determining factors in the innovative process at the corporate level. We argue that climate change drives corporate innovations through various channels. A main finding is that rising energy prices were a key driver for incremental energy efficiency innovations in the enterprises’ production processes. For product innovation, customer requests were a main driver, though often these requests are not directly related to climate issues. The introduction or extension of environmental and energy management systems as well as the certification of these are the most common forms of organizational innovations. For marketing purposes, the topic of climate change was hardly utilized so far. As the most important determinants for corporate climate innovations, corporate structure and flexibility of the product portfolio, political asymmetry regarding environmental regulation and governmental funding were identified.

Abstract
Das vorliegende Diskussionspapier stellt den inhaltlichen Rahmen der kumulativen Dissertation zum Thema „Climate Change and Corporate Innovation Processes“ an der Technischen Universität Dresden dar. Diese besteht aus sechs bereits veröffentlichten Fachartikeln. Durch die gegenwärtig öffentlich geführte Diskussion zum Thema Klimawandel stehen europäische Industrieunternehmen neuen Anforderungen gegenüber. Dazu zählen vor allem neue Ansprüche, die ihr betriebliches Umfeld an sie stellt. Eine Möglichkeit, auf diese neuen Ansprüche zu reagieren, ist Anpassung durch Innovation. Das übergeordnete Ziel der Dissertation ist es deshalb zu untersuchen, wie die Wahrnehmung des Klimawandels seitens der Anspruchsgruppen (Stakeholder) betriebliche Innovations-prozesse beeinflusst. In dem Zusammenhang werden diese Fragestellungen sowohl theoretisch als auch empirisch untersucht. Die Dissertation leistet so einen Beitrag zu verschiedenen Literaturströmungen auf dem Themengebiet „unternehmerische Anpassungsstrategien an den Klimawandel“.

Will Oil Prices Decline Over the Long Run?

Abstract
At present, oil markets appear to be behaving in a fashion similar to that in the late 1970s and early 1980s when oil prices rose sharply over an extended period. Furthermore, like at that time, analysts are split on whether such increases will persist or reverse, and if so by how much. The present paper argues that the similarities between the two episodes are not as strong as they might appear at first sight, and that the likelihood of sharp reversals in prices is not particularly great. There are a number of reasons in support of the view that it is unlikely that the first two decades of this century will mimic the last two decades of the previous century. First, oil demand is likely to grow significantly in line with strong economic growth in non-OECD countries. Second, on the supply side, OPEC is likely to enhance its control over markets over the next two decades, as supply increases in newly opened areas will only partially offset declining rates of production in other geologically mature non-OPEC oil regions. Moreover, while concerns about climate change will spur global efforts to reduce carbon emissions, these efforts are not expected to reduce oil demand. Finally, although there is much talk about alternative fuels, few of these are economically viable at the prices currently envisioned, and given the structural impediments, there is a reduced likelihood that the market will be able to generate sufficient quantities of these alternative fuels over the forecast horizon. The above factors imply that oil prices are likely to continue to exceed the USD 70 to USD 90 range over the long term.
