Abstract
Seit Anfang 1999 veröffentlicht das IWH im vierteljährlichen Abstand einen Frühindikator der Konjunkturentwicklung des Euroraums. Der Indikator, der neben den Auftragseingängen sowie Unternehmer- und Verbraucherumfragen auch die Zinsstruktur berücksichtigt, läuft der tatsächlichen Entwicklung (gegenwärtig approximiert mit Hilfe des Index der Industrieproduktion) um ungefähr ein Quartal voraus und ermöglicht eine Trendprognose der wirtschaftlichen Aktivität.

Parallel business cycles in integrated economies

Abstract
In der Studie werden zwei Probleme thematisiert: Die Frage der konjunkturellen Konvergenz in der Europäischen Währungsunion und der Zusammenhang zwischen der Exportentwicklung und der gesamtwirtschaftlichen Aktivität. Dabei wird gezeigt, daß eine Annäherung der nationalen Konjunkturen durch ähnliche monetäre Rahmenbedingungen begünstigt wird, so daß für die Länder des Euroraums zumindest im Hinblick auf die Richtung der Konjunkturentwicklung eine größere Konvergenz erwartet werden kann. Gestützt wird diese Tendenz dadurch, daß die Integration der Märkte bereits heute weit fortgeschritten ist, was sich nicht zuletzt in einer Intensivierung der Handelsbeziehungen widerspiegelt. Die gegenseitige konjunkturelle Abhängigkeit der Volkswirtschaften hat dadurch zugenommen. Die durchgeführten ökonometrischen Tests zeigen hier, daß zwischen der Entwicklung des realen Bruttoinlandsprodukts und den Ausfuhren in den vierteljährlichen Daten keine signifikanten time-lags mehr nachzuweisen sind. Das weist darauf hin, daß die Multiplikatoreffekte einer autonomen Veränderung der Auslandsnachfrage relativ schnell auf die Binnenkonjunktur überspringen. Empirisch lassen sich diese Ergebnisse durch eine wachsende Bedeutung von intrafirmen Transaktionen erklären, hinter denen die grenzüberschreitende Struktur der Liefer- und Leistungsverflechtungen steht.
