The Characteristics and Geographic Distribution of Robot Hubs in U.S. Manufacturing Establishments

Abstract
We use data from the Annual Survey of Manufactures to study the characteristics and geography of investments in robots across U.S. manufacturing establishments. We find that robotics adoption and robot intensity (the number of robots per employee) is much more strongly related to establishment size than age. We find that establishments that report having robotics have higher capital expenditures, including higher information technology (IT) capital expenditures. Also, establishments are more likely to have robotics if other establishments in the same Core-Based Statistical Area (CBSA) and industry also report having robotics. The distribution of robots is highly skewed across establishments’ locations. Some locations, which we call Robot Hubs, have far more robots than one would expect even after accounting for industry and manufacturing employment. We characterize these Robot Hubs along several industry, demographic, and institutional dimensions. The presence of robot integrators and higher levels of union membership are positively correlated with being a Robot Hub.

Abstract
We argue that automation may make workers and firms more selective in matching their specialized skills and tasks. We call this phenomenon “core-biased technological change”, and wonder whether something similar could be relevant also for offshoring. Looking for evidence in occupational data for European industries, we find that automation increases workers’ and firms’ selectivity as captured by longer unemployment duration, less skill-task mismatch, and more concentration of specialized knowledge in specific tasks. This does not happen in the case of offshoring, though offshoring reinforces the effects of automation. We show that a labor market model with two-sided heterogeneity and search frictions can rationalize these empirical findings if automation strengthens while offshoring weakens the assortativity between workers’ skills and firms’ tasks in the production process, and automation and offshoring complement each other. Under these conditions, automation decreases employment and increases wage inequality whereas offshoring has opposite effects.

Private Equity in the Hospital Industry

Abstract
We examine employment and patient outcomes at hospitals acquired by private equity (PE) firms and PE-backed hospitals. While employment declines at PE-acquired hospitals, core medical workers (physicians, nurses, and pharmacists) increase significantly. The proportion of wages paid to core workers increases at PE-acquired hospitals whereas the proportion paid to administrative employees declines. These results are most pronounced for deals where the acquirers are publicly traded PE-backed hospitals. Non-PE-backed acquirers also cut employment but do not increase core workers or reduce administrative expenditures. Finally, PE-backed acquirers are not associated with worse patient satisfaction or mortality rates compared to their non-PE-backed counterparts.

Abstract
Der Beitrag hat die Entwicklung ausgewählter industrieller Kerne in Ostdeutschland seit 1990 zum Gegenstand. Bei den industriellen Kernen handelte es sich um ehemalige volkseigene Betriebe, die die Treuhandanstalt als sanierungsfähig ansah, für die sich jedoch kurzfristig keine Käufer fanden. Anhand von vier Fallbeispielen wird deren Entwicklung vor und nach der Privatisierung nachgezeichnet und dabei besonderer Wert auf die Wechselwirkungen mit dem regionalen Umfeld gelegt. Alle vier Kernunternehmen existieren fort und stellen marktgängige Produkte und Leistungen her. Die Intensität der Interaktion mit dem regionalen Umfeld fällt allerdings unterschiedlich aus. In allen vier untersuchten Kernen gab es Ausgründungen von Einheiten, die früher zu den Kombinaten gehörten. Neuansiedlungen gab es ebenfalls in allen Fällen. Teils wurden neue Investoren aufgrund eigener „strukturpolitischer“ Aktivitäten der Kern-Unternehmen attrahiert. Teils handelte es sich um Ko-Lokationen, die mit der Standortqualität des regionalen Umfelds zusammenhängen. Im Rahmen der Fallbeispiele waren offenbar positive Wirkungen des regionalen Umfelds bei jenen Kern-Unternehmen besonders günstig, die in urbanen Räumen gelegen sind.

Abstract
This paper investigates the intra-regional development patterns in East Germany with particular reference to the manufacturing sector. When East Germany’s economy was ruled by the central planning regime, the share of industrial workforce in total employment was the greatest in entire Europe. It exceeded the respective value in the Soviet Union at that time. When the transition from a centrally planned economy to a market economy occurred, the East German manufacturing sector faced the greatest challenges.

Enforceability of Noncompetition Agreements and Firm Innovation: Does State Regulation Matter?

Abstract
In this study, we examine how noncompetition agreements and the mobility of human capital – a core asset of any firm – affect innovations of publicly traded firms in the United States. We find that firms in states with stricter noncompetition enforcement have fewer patent applications. We also examine patent forward citations and find that tougher enforcement of such contracts is associated with less innovative patents. Notably, we find that stronger enforcement of noncompetition agreements impedes innovation for firms facing intense industry labor mobility. High-powered, equity-based compensation positively moderates the relationship between noncompetition enforcement and innovation, but only for the quality of innovation.
