Can Germany’s economy stage an unexpected recovery?Steffen MüllerThe Economist, January 30, 2025
How important is mastering information and communication technology (ICT) in modern labor markets? We answer this question with unique data on ICT skills tested in 19 countries. Our two instrumental-variable models exploit technologically induced variation in broadband internet availability that gives rise to variation in ICT skills across countries and German municipalities.

Ob Beteiligungsinvestitionen wirklich so schlecht – oder sogar gut für die Wirtschaft sind und was diese Frage mit Start-ups, Hightech und einem europäischen Silicon Valley zu tun hat, darüber diskutieren wir beim zweiten IWH Policy Talk.
Am Leibniz-Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung Halle (IWH) forschen wir zu ökonomischen Themen und beraten die Wirtschaftspolitik auf Basis unserer wissenschaftlichen Ergebnisse. Das Institut ist Mitglied der Projektgruppe Gemeinschaftsdiagnose, die halbjährlich Gutachten zur Lage der Wirtschaft in der Welt und in Deutschland für die Bundesregierung erstellt. Dazu gehört auch die Konjunkturprognose, also die möglichst genaue Schätzung, wie sich beispielsweise das Wirtschaftswachstum in der nächsten Zeit entwickeln wird.
In jüngster Zeit gibt es in Deutschland – ebenso wie im Ausland – Bestrebungen zur Suche nach Alternativen zur Schaffung von immer größeren kommunalen Gebietskörperschaften. Ein viel diskutierter Ansatz hierzu ist die Kooperation zwischen benachbarten Kommunen in jeweils einzelnen Aufgabenbereichen. Bislang fehlte es an einer Gesamtschau von solchen Interkommunalen Kooperationsvorhaben (IKV).
Economic performance in the euro area has been heterogeneous during the recent decade. Still, intra-euro area real exchange rates have adjusted only slowly. In this paper, we first document that the half-life of intra-euro area real exchange rates has increased strongly after 2008.

This paper investigates how taxes affect relative mobility in the income distribution in the US. Household panel data drawn from the PSID between 1967 and 1996 is employed to analyse the relationship between marginal tax rates and the probability of staying in the same income decile.
