Abstract
Does democratization reduce the cost of credit? Using global syndicated loan data from 1984 to 2014, we find that democratization has a sizable negative effect on loan spreads: a 1-point increase in the zero-to-ten Polity IV index of democracy shaves at least 19 basis points off spreads, but likely more. Reversals to autocracy hike spreads more strongly. Our findings are robust to the comprehensive inclusion of relevant controls, to the instrumentation with regional waves of democratization, and to a battery of other sensitivity tests. We thus highlight the lower cost of loans as one relevant mechanism through which democratization can affect economic development.

Launch of IWH Bankruptcy Update: Number of corporate bankruptcies in Germany constant despite Corona crisis
Despite the Corona outbreak, the number of corporate bankruptcies in Germany so far remains at 2019 levels. This is according to the new IWH Bankruptcy Update provided by the Halle Institute for Economic Research (IWH) on a monthly basis and much earlier than official statistics.

Global economy under the spell of the coronavirus epidemic
The epidemic is obstructing the economic recovery in Germany. Foreign demand is falling, private households forgo domestic consumption if it comes with infection risk, and investments are postponed. Assuming that the spread of the disease can be contained in short time, GDP growth in 2020 is expected to be 0.6% according to IWH spring economic forecast. Growth in East Germany is expected to be 0.9% and thus higher than in West Germany. If the number of new infections cannot be decreased in short time, we expect a recession in Germany.

Foreign Bank Ownership and Income Inequality: Empirical Evidence

Abstract
Using country-level panel data over 1995–2013 on within-country income inequality and foreign bank presence, this paper establishes a positive relation between the two, running from higher foreign bank presence to income inequality. Given that foreign bank participation increased by 62% over the period 1995 to 2013, our baseline results imply a 5.8% increase in the Gini coefficient on average over this period, ceteris paribus. These results are robust to the inclusion of country and year fixed effects and to the use of restrictions on foreign bank entry in the host countries as an instrumental variable. We show that this positive effect is channelled through the lack of greenfield entry and the associated lower levels of competition.

Managerial Ability and Value Relevance of Earnings

Abstract
We examine how management ability affects the extent to which capital markets rely on earnings to value equity. Using a measure of ability that captures a management team’s capacity for generating revenues with a given level of resources compared to other industry peers, we find a strong positive association between managerial ability and the value relevance of earnings. Additional tests show that our results are robust to controlling for earnings attributes and investment efficiency. We use propensity score matching and the 2SLS instrumental variable approach to deal with the issue of endogeneity. For further identification, we examine CEO turnover and find that newly hired CEOs with better managerial abilities than the replaced CEOs increase the value relevance of earnings. We identify weak corporate governance and product market power as the two important channels through which superior management practices play an important role in the corporate decision-making process that positively influence the value relevance of earnings. Overall, our findings suggest that better managers make accounting information significantly more relevant in the market valuation of equity.

Employee Treatment and Contracting with Bank Lenders: An Instrumental Approach for Stakeholder Management

Abstract
Adopting an instrumental approach for stakeholder management, we focus on two primary stakeholder groups (employees and creditors) to investigate the relationship between employee treatment and loan contracts with banks. We find strong evidence that fair employee treatment reduces loan price and limits the use of financial covenants. In addition, we document that relationship bank lenders price both the levels and changes in the quality of employee treatment, whereas first-time bank lenders only care about the levels of fair employee treatment. Taking a contingency perspective, we find that industry competition and firm asset intangibility moderate the relationship between good human resource management and bank loan costs. The cost reduction effect of fair employee treatment is stronger for firms operating in a more competitive industry and having higher levels of intangible assets.

Do Conventional Monetary Policy Instruments Matter in Unconventional Times?

Abstract
This paper investigates how declines in the deposit facility rate set by the ECB affect euro area banks’ incentives to hold reserves at the central bank. We find that, in the face of lower deposit rates, banks with a more interest-sensitive business model are more likely to reduce reserve holdings and allocate freed-up liquidity to loans. The result is driven by well-capitalized banks in the non-GIIPS countries of the euro area. This reveals that conventional monetary policy instruments have limited effects in restoring monetary policy transmission during times of crisis.

CEO Investment of Deferred Compensation Plans and Firm Performance

Abstract
We study how US chief executive officers (CEOs) invest their deferred compensation plans depending on the firm's profitability. By looking at the correlation between the CEO's return on these plans and the firm's stock return, we show that deferred compensation is to a large extent invested in the company equity in good times and divested from it in bad times. The divestment from company equity in bad times arguably reflects CEOs' incentive to abandon the firm and to invest in alternative instruments to preserve the value of their deferred compensation plans. This result suggests that the incentive alignment effects of deferred compensation crucially depend on the firm's health status.

Abstract
Die vorliegende Studie untersucht die ökonomischen Auswirkungen eines durch die Klimaziele der Bundesregierung induzierten Kohleausstiegs in Deutschland. Der Fokus liegt hierbei auf der Braunkohlenwirtschaft – insbesondere in den Braunkohleregionen. Diese werden in einem ersten Schritt räumlich abgegrenzt und beschrieben. Für die weitere Untersuchung bilden energiewirtschaftliche Modellierungen die Grundlage. Diese liefern Ausstiegspfade für die Kohlenutzung, welche sich in den gewählten Kriterien (spezifische Emissionen oder Kraftwerksalter) für die Abschaltungsreihenfolge der Kraftwerke unterscheiden. Darauf aufbauend werden mit Hilfe eines Input-Output-Modells und eines regionalwirtschaftlichen Modells die ökonomischen Effekte des Kohleausstiegs sowohl in den Braunkohleregionen als auch im übrigen Deutschland untersucht. Die Modelle zeigen, dass bei einem frühzeitigen Ausstieg die negativen Effekte des Strukturwandels früher zu Tage treten. Dafür können in diesem Fall jedoch Erholungseffekte laut regionalwirtschaftlichem Modell stärker den negativen Effekten entgegenwirken.
Die Studie untersucht die wirtschaftlichen Chancen in den Braunkohleregionen. Diese bestehen im Grundsatz in einem breiten Spektrum wirtschaftlicher Aktivitäten. Die durchgeführten, exemplarischen Untersuchungen zeigen für alle Braunkohleregionen bedeutende Beschäftigungspotenziale auf. Bereits die aufgezeigten potenziellen Arbeitsplätze in den Bereichen Erneuerbare Energien und Gebäudesanierung können dem Stellenabbau im Zuge des untersuchten Strukturwandels durch den Kohleausstieg entgegenwirken. Abschließend werden flankierende politische Instrumente beschrieben, die die Regionen bei dem bevorstehenden Strukturwandel nutzen und unterstützen können.

Financial Literacy and Self-employment

Abstract
In this paper, we study the relationship between financial literacy and self‐employment. We use established financial literacy questions to measure literacy levels. The analysis shows a highly significant and positive correlation between the index and self‐employment. We address the direction of causality by applying instrumental variable techniques based on information about maternal education. We also exploit information on financial support and family background to account for concerns about the exclusion restriction. The results provide support for a positive effect of financial literacy on the probability of being self‐employed. As financial literacy is acquirable, the findings suggest that entrepreneurial activities might be increased by enhancing financial literacy.
