Can Germany’s economy stage an unexpected recovery?Steffen MüllerThe Economist, January 30, 2025
This capacity building workshop for early to mid-career researchers and scientists aims to discuss practical experiences of informing policy, and to enhance participants’ ability to provide and engage in science advice for policymaking at all levels of government. Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) play a critical role in attaining national, regional and international development and public policy goals.
We estimate the effect of industrial robots on employment, wages, and the composition of jobs in German labor markets between 1994 and 2014. We find that the adoption of industrial robots had no effect on total employment in local labor markets specializing in industries with high robot usage.
We identify the effects of exogenous credit constraints on firm ability to attract and retain skilled workers. To do so, we exploit a shock to the value of the pension obligations of Portuguese banks resulting from a change in accounting norms.

Transferworkshop der Expertenplattform Demographischer Wandel in Sachsen-Anhalt in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Leibniz-Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung Halle (IWH)
Banken, Braunkohle, Ballungsräume: Zur Langen Nacht der Wissenschaften stellten IWH-Forscher aus jeder der drei Abteilungen neue Erkenntnisse vor. Alle Bürgerinnen und Bürger waren herzlich eingeladen. Jeder Vortrag dauerte etwa eine halbe Stunde. Im Anschluss gab es Zeit für Fragen und Anmerkungen.
