The ideal candidate should possess a strong interest in teaching and research in the economics of productivity, growth, firm dynamics, and innovation. We are seeking a profile geared towards micro-founded research, with a focus on firms and workers. A strong background in areas such as structural change, business dynamism, resource allocation, and market structure is highly desirable. The position requires an economist capable of addressing macroeconomic questions using microdata. A strong foundation in theory and proficiency in handling microdata are prerequisites for this role. 

The professorship serves to deepen the collaboration between the University of Jena and the Halle Institute for Economic Research (IWH). The IWH is one of the seven economic research institutes of the Leibniz Association in Germany (www.iwh-halle.de). The professorship is associated with the new Center for Factor Market Transformation and Productivity Growth (which includes CompNet) and also contributes to the research areas of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration at the University of Jena (www.wiwi.uni-jena.de/en). 

The requirements are as follows: Applicants will possess a doctorate in Economics or closely related disciplines – or will be awarded one by Fall 2025. The duration of the PhD project and employment together up to the deadline should not exceed six years. The candidate has the potential for successful publications in top-quality journals and, ideally, an existing network of international research collaborations. The candidate is also expected to teach in the Faculty’s Master’s Programs. Knowledge of the German language is not a requirement for the position. 

In legal terms, there will be an individual selection process carried out for the position hereby announced. The appointee is assigned the status of a professor (W1) at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena according to section 85 (7) of the Thuringian Higher Education Act. The professorship comes along with an employment at IWH. The employment relationship will initially be limited to three years and may be extended by a further three years, given a positive evaluation. The preferred starting date is October 2025.
