Gift-Exchange in Society and the Social Integration of Refugees: Evidence from a Field, a Laboratory, and a Survey Experiment

Abstract
Refugee integration requires broad support from the host society, but only a minority is actively engaged. Given that most individuals reciprocate kind behavior, we examine the idea that the proportion of supporters will increase as a reciprocal response to refugees’ contributions to society through volunteering. Our nationwide survey experiment shows that citizens’ intentions to contribute time and money rise significantly when they learn about refugees’ pro-social activities. However, we find a substantial heterogeneity in the observed treatment effects. Individuals with a high reciprocal inclination show higher willingness to contribute time, while individuals with a lower reciprocal inclination are ready to contribute money after learning about the refugees' good deeds. Information regarding the possibility to establish a mutual support relationship with the refugees does not generally increase the willingness to contribute time or money beyond the information on refugees’ general contributions to the society. We complement this investigation with experiments in the lab and the field that confirm our findings for actual behavior.

Abstract
Citizen Science im Bereich der Geistes‐ und Sozialwissenschaften – Social Citizen Science (SCS) – ist ein bislang wenig untersuchter Teilbereich bürgerwissenschaftlicher Aktivitäten. Eine ihrer Besonderheiten ist, dass sie gerade aufgrund ihrer Nähe zur Alltagswelt schwer objektivierbare Beobachtungen verarbeitet. Fragen der Sicherstellung wissenschaftlicher Qualität und der Partizipationsfähigkeit stellen sich mithin auf andere Weise als in naturwissenschaftlich geprägter Citizen Science. Die vorliegende Studie legt hierzu erstmals Daten vor. Es zeigt sich eine große Diversität empirischer Zugänge und Traditionen in SCS. Hervorzuheben ist, dass sich unter den SCS‐Aktivitäten gleichermaßen inner‐ als auch außerakademisch initiierte und geleitete befinden. Damit ist die eingeladene Partizipation durch Wissenschaftseinrichtungen nicht als das allgemeine Referenzmodell für SCS anzusehen, sondern gleichwertig mit uneingeladener Partizipation aus der Zivilgesellschaft heraus. Für SCS‐Vorhaben geht es daher weniger um die Herstellung von „Partizipationsfähigkeit“ von Laien an Forschungsprozessen, sondern vielmehr von „Zusammenarbeitsfähigkeit“ diverser inner‐ und außerakademischer Akteure.

On the Effect of Business and Economic University Education on Political Ideology: An Empirical Note

Abstract
We empirically test the hypothesis that a major in economics, management, business administration or accounting (for simplicity referred to as Business/Economics) leads to more-conservative (right-wing) political views. We use a panel dataset of individuals (repeated observations for the same individuals over time) living in the Netherlands, drawing data from the Longitudinal Internet Studies for the Social Sciences from 2008 through 2013. Our results show that when using a simple fixed effects model, which fully controls for individuals’ time-invariant traits, any statistically and quantitatively significant effect of a major in Business/Economics on the Political Ideology of these individuals disappears. We posit that, at least in our sample, there is no evidence for a causal effect of a major in Business/Economics on individuals’ Political Ideology.

Abstract
Citizens of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) regained their civil liberties when the Berlin Wall fell 25 years ago. Since then, they have been able to travel freely and have been free to choose where to live and work. The fall of the Berlin Wall was quickly followed by preparations for German Unification at a speed unparalleled in history: the first free Volkskammer elections on 18 March 1990, the economic, monetary and social union on 1 July 1990, and finally, the unification of Germany when the GDR was included in the jurisdiction of the Basic Law of the Federal Republic of Germany. The integration of the economies of East and West Germany, however, has proven to be a drawn-out process.

The Internationalization of Science and Its Influence on Academic Entrepreneurship

Abstract
We examine whether scientists employed in foreign countries and foreign-educated native researchers are more “entrepreneurial” than their “domestic” counterparts. We conjecture that foreign-born and foreign-educated scientists possess broader scientific skills and social capital, which increases their likelihood that they will start their own companies. To test this hypothesis we analyze comprehensive data from researchers at the Max Planck Society in Germany. Our findings provide strong support for the conjecture that academic entrepreneurship can be stimulated by facilitating the mobility of scientists across countries.
