Abstract
Mortgage lenders that concentrate in a few markets invest more in information collection than diversified lenders. Concentrated lenders focus on the information-intensive jumbo market and on high-risk borrowers. They are better positioned to price risks and, thus, ration credit less. Adverse selection, however, leads to higher retention of mortgages relative to diversified lenders. Finally, concentrated lenders have higher profits than diversified lenders, their profits vary less systematically, and their stock prices fell less during the 2007—2008 credit crisis. The results imply that geographic diversification led to a decline in screening by lenders, which likely played a role in the 2007–2008 crisis.

Do Banks Benefit from Internationalization? Revisiting the Market Power-Risk Nexus

Abstract
Recent developments on international financial markets have called the benefits of
bank globalization into question. Large, internationally active banks have
acquired substantial market power, and international activities have not
necessarily made banks less risky. Yet, surprisingly little is known about the
actual link between bank internationalization, bank risk, and market power.
Analyzing this link is the purpose of this paper. We jointly estimate the
determinants of risk and market power of banks, and we analyze the effects of
changes in terms of the number of foreign countries (the extensive margin) and
the volume of foreign assets (the intensive margin). Our paper has four main
findings. First, there is a strong negative feedback effect between risk and market
power. Second, banks with higher shares of foreign assets, in particular those held
through foreign branches, have higher market power at home. Third, holding
assets in a large number of foreign countries tends to increase bank risk. Fourth,
the impact of internationalization differs across banks from different banking
groups and of different size.

Abstract
We analyze the determinants fo standards and demand for loans to firms and house-holds over the last business cycle using the comprehensive and confidential Bank Lending Survery from the Euro area. There is significant variation of standards and demand over the cycle. Standards for business loans vary more during the business cycle than the lending standards for households, whereas credit demand from households varies more than demand from firms. Lending standards vary mainly due to charges in perception of borrower risk, bank balance sheet positions and competitive pressures. In particular, we find that higher GDP growth softens lending standards for all loans, i. e. lending standards are pro-cyclical. However, we also find pro-cyclicality in credit demand.

Abstract
Modern trade theory emphasizes firm-level productivity differentials to explain
the cross-border activities of non-financial firms. This study tests whether a
productivity pecking order also determines international banking activities. Using
a novel dataset that contains all German banks’ international activities, we
estimate the ordered probability of a presence abroad (extensive margin) and the
volume of international assets (intensive margin). Methodologically, we enrich the
conventional Heckman selection model to account for the self-selection of banks
into different modes of foreign activities using an ordered probit. Four main
findings emerge. First, similar to results for non-financial firms, a productivity
pecking order drives bank internationalization. Second, only a few non-financial
firms engage in international trade, but many banks hold international assets, and
only a few large banks engage in foreign direct investment. Third, in addition to
productivity, risk factors matter for international banking. Fourth, gravity-type
variables have an important impact on international banking activities.

Securitization and the Declining Impact of Bank Finance on Loan Supply: Evidence from Mortgage Originations

Abstract
Low‐cost deposits and increased balance sheet liquidity raise banks' supply of illiquid loans more than loans easily sold or securitized. We exploit the inability of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to purchase jumbo mortgages to identify an exogenous change in liquidity. The volume of jumbo mortgage originations relative to nonjumbo originations increases with bank holdings of liquid assets and decreases with bank deposit costs. This result suggests that the increasing depth of the mortgage secondary market fostered by securitization has reduced the effect of lender's financial condition on credit supply.

Abstract
Mit dem zum 1. Januar 2007 neu eingeführten Elterngeld verfolgt der Gesetzgeber unter anderem das Ziel, mehr Väter für eine Elternzeit zu begeistern. Bislang wurden die Auswirkungen des Elterngelds insbesondere aus familienpolitischer Perspektive betrachtet. Ziel dieses Beitrags ist es jedoch, die unternehmenspolitischen Folgen des Elterngelds zu untersuchen.
Die Entwicklung der Elterngeldanträge im Jahr 2007 deutet darauf hin, dass zunehmend mehr Väter von der Elternzeit Gebrauch machen. Dabei handelt es sich in mehr als der Hälfte der Fälle um berufstätige Väter. Konnten Unternehmen in der Vergangenheit das Risiko, dass eine wichtige Position im Unternehmen für einen längeren Zeitraum aufgrund der Geburt eines Kindes unbesetzt ist, verhältnismäßig einfach dadurch senken, indem ein Mann beschäftigt wurde, wird diese Strategie in Zukunft an Bedeutung verlieren. Es ist zu erwarten, dass dieses veränderte Risikoumfeld einerseits die Karrierechancen der Frauen verbessern und zu einer Verringerung der Lohnlücke zwischen den Geschlechtern beitragen kann. Es ist jedoch auch zu erwarten, dass sich die Risikosituation der Unternehmen insgesamt verschlechtert und bei gegebener Risikotragfähigkeit bisher tragbare Risiken zukünftig nicht mehr eingegangen werden können, was sich negativ auf die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung auswirken könnte.

Abstract
This paper analyses in a simple global games framework welfare effects of different communication strategies of a central bank: it can either publish no more than its overall assessment of the economy or be more transparent, giving detailed reasons for this assessment. The latter strategy is shown to be superior because it enables agents to use private information and to be less dependent on common knowledge. This result holds true even if the strategies of agents are strategic complements, for which case it has been argued that too much transparency might induce agents to neglect their private knowledge.

Weil dieser Zusammenhang nicht-monoton ist, kann eine Bank gezwungen sein, mehr Eigenkapital als vorgeschrieben zu halten.

Distance and International Banking

Abstract
This paper asks how important distance is as a determinant of international banking and whether distance has become less important over time. If technological progress has lowered information costs and if information costs increase in distance, the importance of distance should have declined. I use data on assets and liabilities of commercial banks from five countries (France, Germany, Italy, UK, and US) in 50 host countries for the years 1983–99 to test this hypothesis. Generally, I find that banks hold significantly lower assets in distant markets and that the importance of distance for the foreign asset holdings of banks has not changed.
